Axis Syllabus Workshops

Fundamental Principles

Taught by Miranda Janeschild, Certified Axis Syllabus Instructor

To The Side - Bending

10/29 - 10/30, 2011 (Berkeley, CA)

12/10 - 12/11, 2011 (Santa Cruz, CA)

Side bending brings into view healthy movement transitions for a dynamic dancing body.  A true side bend is a coordination that requires torso, hip and shoulder joint articulations to be distributed across the skeleton.  This class will explore the C-Star, descending to and ascending from the floor and beginning torsion movements. Transitions are found through round weight bearing surfaces for ease of rolling, pivoting and basic falling studies. The ultimate dance will use structurally sound skeletal architecture and spiral movement patterns to harness kinetic energy efficiently.

The Undulating Body

1/14 & 15, 2012 (Santa Cruz)

The dance begins with a wave.  A spine is in a constant flux and motion. An undulating spine connects the pelvis, ribcage and head as a receptor and transmitter of information and forces. We will work toward cultivating a deep sense of the subtle spine.  Movers obtain internal cues that indicate safe spinal articulations, respond to receiving impact, and channel forces to distribute recycled kinetic energy.   The dance will use a continuous flow of the wave in a spiral phrasing.

Sculpting First Steps

2/11 & 12, 2012 (Santa Cruz)

Walking patterns serve as a starting point for learning other coordination’s such as stair climbing, running, a sport or dance. If the feet do not support the arch and ankle, the knees are not aligned, the hip arcs are not utilized, and the curves in the spine are not adjusted for optimal rebound, then the integrity of these structures will cause a gradual or even sudden deterioration.  Healthy walking includes understanding of structure and disposition of: foot / ankle supports & articulations, the pelvis rotary under-curve, diagonal arcs of the extremities as the foot receives weight, counter rotations of the masses and the continual undulating wave in the tri-axial skeleton.

Aerial Dance Class Series

Taught by Miranda Janeschild

The workshops progressively develop according to participants understanding of aerial dynamics and leading to partner dances both on the wall and center floor.  This class will expose the student to Axis Syllabus principles in the air including: bio-mechanics, undulations and centrifugal forces that support ease of flight.  Beginning movement scores & dances are presented as well as opportunities to create own choreography. Ultimately, highly dynamic, risk taking, yet safe and strong duet ensembles are created that resemble birds flocking and water cascading around a central axis point. Aerial classes must be taken progressively or by permission of instructor if not attending beginning series.

Performance Dance Class Series

Taught by Miranda Janeschild

The ultimate gift to the self and community is to perform one’s developed movement skills cultivated through joy, focus and hard work.  This class aims to empower the students who have participated in the aerial class series and is open to all aerialists/dancers from the community who also want to culminate a dance piece to performance. Dances that have been learned in the aerial classes will be performed as well as individual work generated in the classes.  The creative resources that are uniquely one’s own will be refined and brought to fruition as a performer.

* Description of AXIS SYLLABUS (AS) DANCE

The Axis Syllabus is a conscious movement method applied to dancing  and based on the work of Frey Faust.  Axis Syllabus is a movement training and weight distribution method of learning to dance which can be applied to many forms of physical training. The  eventual outcome is experiencing a freedom of movement, an exhilarating ease of flight and inner joy while dancing.   It holds a strong scientific spirit and claims to be anatomically functionally based.  AS uses the analysis of anatomical and physiodynamic principles to improve the longevity of a dancer.  It strives to make DANCE accessible to all in a playground of discovery and adventure.  AS is dedicated to resist stagnation and promotes a democratic class participation where all are encouraged to follow their own learning curve while minimizing, adapting or adding to the given material. A thriving desire of the AS is to incorporate all levels of experience and supports an ongoing dialogue and investigation between all participants.
